The prize was created on the initiative of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and first awarded in 1999. It is currently funded by SIAM.

At present the prize winner will receive an honorarium of 5000 USD, will not pay the registration fee to the congress, and will have travel and living expenses covered by the organizers.
